After the Uttrakhand CM Harish Rawat allowed a two hour break to Muslims for their special prayers for Fridays, BJP ans Shiv Sena lashed out at him asking “what if Hindus also begin demanding breaks for their puja”. This exercise by Rawat has been termed as appeasement of minorities to garner a few extra votes. The state government had allowed Muslims a two hour break from 2:30 PM to 2:00 PM, for every Friday, which the BJP leader Nalin Kohli called “unfortunate”.
On being questioned by ANI, on the issue, Kohli said “What if Hindu community says that they need two-hour break on Monday for Shiv puja, on Tuesday for Hanumanji or on Sunday for Sun God?” The concern of the leaders seem legit, as Hindu religion contains of more Gods than any other religion, and if Hindus begin demanding such exemptions, no work in the government offices would take place. One of the reasons for allowing exemptions to Muslims, apart from vote bank politics can also be genuine respect for customs. Since they have only been granted an exemption for one day, and not more. Unlike in Hindus, where everyday a different God can be worshiped.
Earlier, the same day, one of the BJP MP, Paresh Verma had stated “all terrorists are muslims, who never cast vote for BJP, considering it to be a patriotic party”. To which the state government had demanded action against the minister, for making such ill-founded statements.
