Just last month, Arvind Kejriwal, while speaking in the Delhi Assembly, had boasted of having procured the papers which he claimed to be conclusive proof showing PM Narendra Modi had taken a bribe of Rs. 25 crores when he was the Chief Minster of Gujarat. However, interesting thing is that outside of the Assembly, he refused to show these papers or furnish the proof. Many people, repeatedly asked him to show the proof but he did not say a single word.
In the same fashion, yesterday Rahul Gandhi has said that he is in possession of some documents that point out towards PM Modi’s alleged personal involvement in some scams. He even said that he wants to expose the real face of the PM, but he is not being given the opportunity to do so. Despite such hue and cry, when Rahul Gandhi was asked to show the said papers, he outrightly refused to do so. He simply kept his mouth shut and did not furnish any documents.
So now the question arises as to why these two leaders have kept their mouths shut when it came to furnishing of proofs? The reason for this is what we term as ‘Parliamentary Immunity’ or ‘Privilege’.
This means that all parliamentarians and legislators enjoy a certain privilege and immunity, whereby they enjoy complete freedom of speech, freedom from arrest, and exemption from attendance as witnesses.
This simply means that any legislator cannot be arrested or prosecuted in a Court of law for whatever statements he gives inside the Parliament. This is exactly why both these leaders have only been making such strong allegations inside of the Assembly and never outside.
