The World Bank has reportedly said that it is for now, stopping the appointment of neutral party expert to solve this issues, as requested by India, as well as a Chairman of the Inter-nation Court of Arbitration as requested by Pakistan.
The issue has been going on for years regarding the hydro-electrical power plants that are still under construction along the river Indus.
The President of the World Bank group, Mr. Jim Yong Kim has said that the two countries should consider alternative methods of dispute resolution and should try to first amicably resolve the issue within themselves. For the sake of the treaty, they should try to find a solution peacefully first. We hope that these two countries can come to certain common terms by the end of January next year.
The pause was announced in the light and spirit of the treaty and a letter conveying the same has been sent to the respective Finance Ministers of the two countries. He even emphasized that they are doing so with the purpose of safeguarding the water treaty.
The two power plants are being built by India on river Kishengunga and Ratle and neither of these two projects are being sponsored by the World Bank.
It should be known that this particular Indus Water Treaty has withstood the tests of time and has been implemented despite the frequent tensions between India and Pakistan. The said treaty is in fact, one of the most successfully implemented treaty in the international arena.
The treaty aimed to increase the cooperation between the two countries for the use of the river waters. The treaty also consists of methods to resolve a dispute.
